We are thrilled to see Scout Mandolin Founder Julie Martin featured in the latest issue of Modern Luxury Weddings California.
The jewelry maven (and newlywed) behind Scout Mandolin, has relocated from San Diego to Napa and is debuting the brand’s first showroom in early 2018!
See below for the full interview with Julie and more exclusive photos from her wedding.
JM: It’s the wedding capital of the country! So it offers natural inspiration. I’m inspired by the love of two people. They are committing their life to each other. I’m getting to be a part of somebody’s journey.
Tell us about the most unusual request you’ve received.
JM: This man knew his fiancee was into numerology, so we had to get the exact number of diamonds in the ring down to where it would add up right.
Any other symbolic details?
JM: Some have included a thumbprint on the inside of the band that only they know is there – or the geographical coordinates of where they met. We’ve also added a birthstone on the inside. A ring should be designed three-dimensionally.
Let’s talk trends for 2018.
JM: We’re seeing interesting cuts in diamonds. There’s a fairly new octagon cut that has 88 facets, which is more than the round brilliant. There’s also a shield diamond that’s more triangular. Classic yellow gold will come back stronger in the next few years.
Share your advice for someone custom-creating a design.
JM: Don’t be afraid to ask what your beloved wants. People want to be involved, so don’t get caught up in the ring being a complete surprise.
